Nucleco participates in the 2024 European Researchers' Night

01 October 2024

Nucleco, together with Sogin, participated in the 2024 European Researchers' Night, the initiative promoted by the European Community since 2005, with the aim of creating opportunities for researchers and citizens to meet and disseminate scientific culture.

Once again this year, our Group renewed its membership of the NET scieNcETogether project, a partnership of leading research institutions, universities, companies, institutions and associations to promote scientific dissemination.

On Friday 27 September, Sogin and Nucleco opened the doors of their facilities to the public at the Casaccia Research Centre. Nucleco welcomed numerous visitors for a tour of the work areas dedicated to laboratory activities, radiological characterisation and radioactive waste management.

During the tour, participants were able to see how a live demonstration of the measurement of simulated radioactive waste using a tomograph, and the preparation and pretreatment phases of samples analysed in the radiometric laboratory.

Demonstration videos were shown on the dismantling operations for large components and the compaction cell of the Plant used to treat radioactive waste, with an overview of the type of instrumentation used during the various activities and the personal protective equipment provided to operating technical personnel. The "3D Survey”, which made it possible to virtually "enter" a nuclear facility generated a lot of interest and wonder.

Young and old alike were involved in live science experiments and interactive games.

The enthusiasm and inquisitiveness shown by visitors testify to the importance of initiatives such as the 2024 European Researchers' Night to promote a culture of science.

Nucleco and Sogin will continue to support and participate in science outreach events, actively contributing to building open and informed dialogue with the public on all the different activities relating to the nuclear sector.
